Osney Heron Catches a Fish
Oxford's famous Osney Heron, which is frequently seen waiting under the Botley Road Bridge for a fish or two to eat!
Here, the Grey Heron is filmed walking in front of the Botley Road Bridge arches as The River Thames flows through them.
The Heron occasionally taps and feels the water with its feet as it walks, before slowly stooping down then quickly grabbing a small fish out of the water and swallowing it whole.

"Stag Gates" present a sorry story for So'ton Civic Council. Corporate vandalism? Or practical planning? They were originally constructed around 1830 as the magnificent entrance to the Earl of Peterborough's former estate off Lodge road - 'Bevois Mount House', built in 1725. It was by then in the ownership of a local engineer, a Mr Betts, who (amongst other construction work) built the wooden 'Victoria Pier' (now known as the 'Royal Pier', opened in 1833 by Princess Victoria - but nowadays another Council Indecision Catastrophe as it still lies in ruins). By the mid 1850s, Betts had 'fallen on hard times', and sold the whole estate - most of it to speculative builders who built the present-day roads & houses. In 1900 the house became the home to the Hartley Institute - the forerunner of today's University. After the first World War the house was sold, demolished, and everything "redeveloped" to provide more housing. But the gates were acquired by the formidable William Borough Hill, the city's architect, valuer, agent etc etc.(recall Hill Lane?). In 1919 he donated them to the City - they were dismantled - the wrought-iron gates became the main entrance to the civic cemetary entrance on Hill Lane; and the huge stone gate-piers, surmounted by reclining stags, were re-erected either side of the start of Lodge Road from the Avenue - but with a tramline running right down the centre of the road. This meant, as road traffic increased, that cars got held up, and it became a bottle-neck. The Council's solution? Knock 'em down! However, nobody is sure what happened to the two stags, which were carved in stone. Tradition and rumour has it that they were stealthily recovered by W B Hill, on the back of two carts, and then buried in a garden, maybe in Regent's Park or Chilworth, to avoid detection. So the mystery is still alive . . .

Hi, thanks for commenting - it looks the the head and legs of a dragonfly to me? I can't see what looks like a spider except for what I think are the legs of the dragonfly?
